For this Saturday's morning run, we decided to run down around the Water Front park area. The plan was to start by running the Anthem 5K route, and then run along the Riverwalk path. Sounded simple enough right. Man was I wrong.
I got up about 5:45 am feeling good and ready to go. I went through my morning routine letting the dogs out, two pugs. Then ate some yogurt, and then got online to see if anyone else was around yet. Nope everyone must still be getting around, so I decided to go over the Anthem route to make sure I had it down forward and backward. I pull up www.Anthem5K.com and click on Map. Ok, head down River Rd, turn right onto Ohio, right on Mellwood, right on Spring, left onto Story, stright onto Main, and finish in front of Slugger Field, no problem.
So I check back to see if anyone is around yet, and yep Kriston and Joe are about. We exchange a few messages about which parking lot we are meeting at, and it's time to head off. About half way there, I get a text that we were wrong about the street that the parking lot is on. Is this a sign of things to come.
So we all get there, I end up being the last to arrive. Gotta work on that. I meet C.K. for the first time and it's time to head out. Oh, but wait, my Garmin hasn't picked up yet. We wait about 5 minutes for it to pick up, and I finally decide to go and let it pick up whenever it decides to. Maybe that's another sign.
Follow up:
So we are finally off, and we are at a nice comfortable pace, and we come to a road, and Kriston and C.K. say hey, we need to turn here. I say no, that is Frankfort, we need to turn on Ohio. I don't think anyone was fully convinced that I knew where I was going, but they followed me anyway. So now I need to apologize, for we never made it to Ohio. Those who know that area, know were I messed up. Those who may not, Ohio apparently becomes Frankfort depending on what map you look at. However, the street sign there makes no mention on Ohio. Long story short the Anthem 5K rounte ended up being the Anthem 4.8 mile route.
I must admit everyone was a good sport about my faux paux, including C.K. who ended up getting a new distance PR. Glad I could help albeit unintentionally. So, now C.K. is heading out and that leaves myself, Joe, and Kriston. We all need a bathroom break, so we decided to head up into the park to use the restrooms there. Well, apparently no one is actually suppose to use the parks in Louisville during the winter months as all bathrooms including these are locked for the season. So know we are trying to decide what to do now. We end up going to White Castle and let me just say at that time of day, that was an interesting experience.
Now that we have that out of the way, we decide rather than head down the Riverwalk Path, we go over the 2nd street bridge into Indiana. Now any other day that would probably have been a great idea, and I'm not saying it was a bad one this day, but going into Indiana, with the icy wind in our faces was not exactly a lot of fun. Joe ended up running on ahead of me and Kriston to try to get to his doctors appointment on time. We made it over, and ran around along the water front area, and then ran back to the Kentucky side.
Once on the Kentucky side, me and Kriston thought we would try to go ahead and run a little way up the Riverwalk Path. As we headed up under I-64, we reallized that our Garmins were not picking up, so we decided to double back and finish out the run on River Rd. We ended up with probably a few tenths over 12.12 miles for the day. Not a bad run, and a new Distance PR for Kriston. She really did great on this run. She has really came a long way even since I first met her, and she has a way of making every run enjoyable. She is just a great person.
After we finished our run, Me and Kriston went back up to White Castle to try to get some breakfast, and to warm up, but we were to late, so we settled for coffee while we waited for Joey to arrive.
It was really a great day, and it was really nice meeting C.K. for the first time. I just hope I haven't scared him off with the extra mileage.
