This was my first half in 3 years so glad to be back out there. All in all I’m pretty content with it, finished in 2:06:17. I was hoping for under 2:00. I was doing good until around about 9 miles when I began to have pain in both hips. Not sure what was up with that. My first thought was that maybe it was because a lot of my runs had been on a treadmill as opposed to out on the pavement, but then I did run a 10 miler in the training series and had no issues with that. Then I thought that maybe it was the run into the track where you go through the dip under the track. I have done zero hill work, and that is the only significant hill, but it was right before the pain started, so still not sure. But given that and I still managed a 9:38 pace average, I’ll take it and move on to the next one. Maybe the monumental, not sure yet.May 14, 2017 at 10:02 am #61631
Good job on the Mini. I was registered, but couldn’t run this year. In fact I wasn’t even in Indiana. I always register for the following year’s Mini at the expo the night before (I actually registered for the 2018 on Friday before this year’s Mini from here in RI). But, I suffered a torn meniscus back in March. I’m under a non-surgical injection treatment. The recovery for this treatment is somewhat longer than traditional arthroscopic surgery…but more permanent and thorough. Consequently I haven’t run since mid-March…and won’t be running again until sometime in late-June. Since 2004 I’ve been registered for the Mini ever year. This year, and 2013 I wasn’t able to actually run it. In 2013 I was assisting my older brother who’d had surgery that week prior. I was actually in Indianapolis that day…but to catch my flight back to RI. I let a friend use my entry this year.
These days I’d take that 2:06 you ran. My times in the Mini the last few years have been right around 2:10-2:15. Geez…not all that many years ago I was running it in just a couple minutes over 1:30. Getting old sucks! Maybe next year we can run it together.

Sorry to hear about the torn meniscus. Hope the injections work well for you and you get back out there sooner than later.
If that time had been without the unexpected pain, I wouldn’t give it a second thought, but since I had been running better than I really ever have, I was hoping for better. I had an excellent 10 miler this last weekend outside with 1 pretty equal hill to the one in question with no pain or anything. Just for the fun of it, I went ahead and registered for the Geist half which is this weekend while I am still in shape for a half just to see how it goes. I’ll report back.
Yeah, I have registered for all but I think last years mini for about the last 7 or 8 years and had one other year in that time that I didn’t run due to injury so gave my entry to someone else. I also am already registered to run next year so maybe we’ll get the chance to run one together.
